Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is a medication that has been approved by the FDA for treatment of opioid (morphine, vicodin, oxycodone, heroin) addiction. It is currently available as Subutex (Buprenorphine alone) and more commonly is used in combination with Naloxone (Suboxone, Zubsolv, Bunavail) It is very effective in in management of detox symptoms during withdrawal and also prevents relapse during maintainance. Cognitive behavioral therapy and a comprehensive treatment plan are highly recommended during Buprenorphine treatment . Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agent, which means it produces certain effects of opioids such as euphoria and respiratory depression but at a lower intensity than other opioids such as heroin, morphine or methadone. At moderate doses it has a ceiling effect, which means after a certain point any increase in dose does not cause an increase in effect of the medication. These unique qualities make Buprenorphine
  • safer to use than opioids
  • less risk of misuse
  • decrease withdrawal symptoms and cravings from opioids

Vivitrol

Vivitrol is long acting injectable form of naloxone. This is given once amonth to treat opioid addiction or alcohol addiction. It is an opioid receptor antagonist, which means it reverses the effects of opioids. Cognitive behavioral therapy is necessary for effective treatment of addiction.

Probuphine

This is an implantable form of Buprenorphine which continuously delivers Buprenorphine. There are 4 small implants that are inserted under the skin of the arm. The implant delivers Buprenorphine for 6 months after which you can ask your doctor if you could get another implant in the other arm. Insertion and removal of the implant is performed by doctors who have undergone special training for this procedure.

Naloxone

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist which reverses the effects of opioids. It is used to treat opioid overdose and helps save lives. We offer Narcan training at our clinic to all patients and their families. This training is important for successful use of Narcan in case of an opioid overdose.
