Buprenorphine is a medication that has been approved by the FDA for treatment of opioid (morphine, vicodin, oxycodone, heroin) addiction. It is currently available as Subutex (Buprenorphine alone) and more commonly is used in combination with Naloxone (Suboxone, Zubsolv, Bunavail)

Vivitrol is long acting injectable form of Naloxone. This is given once a month to treat opioid addiction or alcohol addiction. It is an opioid receptor antagonist, which means it reverses the effects of opioids. Cognitive behavioral therapy is necessary for effective treatment of addiction.

Probuphine is an implantable form of Buprenorphine which continuously delivers Buprenorphine. There are 4 small implants that are inserted under the skin of the arm. The implant delivers Buprenorphine for 6 months after which you can ask your doctor if you could get another implant in the other arm.
